Day 5 -- Beginning the Drive North

Summary:
the route driven so far

  • drive from Prince Rupert to Stewart, BC
  • distance travelled: (475 km)
  • hours on the road:  (6.5 hrs)
  • Regrettable decisions: (1)
  • wildlife seen: (1)
    • ducks (I know, I'm stretching here.  You'd think, given all the warning signs I see on the highway about bears, elk, moose and deer, I'd see something ... but nothing yet.  I'm starting to think it's all a lie)
After a decent night's sleep (finally!), I decided to forego a hike and sleep in a bit.  A great decision on my part though it does mean that I missed out the local scenery of Prince Rupert ... well some of it.  I did explore the town a bit and found that they have an interesting? sense of humor ... I am a farm girl but, I'll admit, I've never actually been cow tipping, so I can't say whether this sign is accurate or not.

For those of you not familiar with cow tipping, it's probably better that way.

Exactly

I'm not sure how I feel about this other sign ... I mean if someone used that line on me, I'd either buy them a drink out of pity or laugh in their face ... probably both.

Leaving Prince Rupert
After some coffee and my stroll around town, it was time to get on the road.

As expected, I lost cell service and radio coverage shortly after leaving Prince Rupert.  Thank goodness I had my phone loaded up with audio books (thank you Kes for putting me onto the public library app!).

About midday through the day, the regrettable decision of today reared its head.  When I started the day, it was a little more overcast and I was driving mostly East.  However, come noon-ish, the sun was out and I had made the turn to head North ... and the intense sense of heat on my left arm make me realize that I forgot to put sunscreen on today ... 😰.  Hopefully I got some on quick enough (hard to do while driving but it's not like there are a lot of places to pull over on the highway); the arm doesn't feel warm right now nor is it red ... but we'll see what tomorrow brings.
near Stewart

The drive took me longer than it should have because I kept stopping to take photos.  It's so gorgeous up here.  I'll try not to overwhelm you with landscapes because, after a while, one mountain looks like another, I'm sure.  But here are a few.
Alaska, yay!

Random boat ... because why not!
After I made it to Stewart and checked in for the night, I got about exploring.  Stewart is an incredibly small town right on the board with Alaska.  So, of course, I jumped in the car and drove the 3 km to the border, ready to make excuses as to why I needed to cross into Alaska ... only to discover that the US didn't even have border security there.  Sadly, Hyder, Alaska, is even smaller than Stewart.  But it's "the friendliest ghost town in the US" and also may be the prettiest.  I drove around for a bit and took more photos then headed back to Stewart.  After a stroll around town and the procurement of a bottle of wine, I tried to figure out my dinner options ... turns out they were limited to the local grocery store (which doesn't take credit cards) or the local Chinese place (I know, random, right?!).  Turns out, the place was pretty good.  There were a few locals in there while I picked up my to-go order.  Back to the AirBnB for some relaxation before another day on the road.

Exhibit A ... GIANT remote
The little hotel I'm staying at is cute and a little random ... it's a historic building that was build in 1925 (refurbished 25 years ago).  Stewart, like most towns up here, has a history of logging and mining.  Apparently some movies have been filmed here too (random!).
